As a fashion content writer I think it’s very interesting how designers work their cultural identity into present-day fashion. What was interesting about Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s return to New York Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2027 was the potential of the collection to show how Indian craftsmanship can be woven into global fashion influences.
Sabyasachi returned to the New York runway after nearly 18 years, with a 72-look collection called “Bengal Byzantine Broadway,” per ELLE. The collection combined relaxed staples like denim, button-downs, plaid shirts and western-inspired accessories with intricate Indian craftsmanship.
Where Indian Handicrafts Meet Americana
What I noticed about the collection was how Sabyasachi connected the American Western style with the Indian design traditions. They wore denim jackets, blue jeans, denim vests, plaid shirts and cowboy hats, and mixed them with highly detailed pieces that showed the designer’s craftsmanship.
Hand-beaded coats, quilted linings and jackets with embroidered tulle cow-prints were also in the mix. These details added a more artistic and luxurious quality to familiar American items of clothing.
As a fashion writer, this combination is representative of how cultural influences can be applied without a collection being a replica of ethnic garments. Instead Sabyasachi showcased Indian craftsmanship in a modern, international language of fashion.
The History of Jewelry
I also saw the jewelry. There was a collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art and large gold pieces, cuff bracelets and pendants and rings inspired by historical jewelry traditions.
Often the clothes themselves were loose and understated so that the jewelry could be displayed. The contrast created a strong visual balance to the look, mixing simple wardrobe pieces with dramatic accessories.
The emphasis on handmade craftsmanship was particularly relevant to today’s fashion industry. As technology and artificial intelligence gain more importance in the creative industries, the value of handmade work occupies a special place in fashion.
Sabyasachi’s Spring 2027 collection, to me, is a great example of how fashion can connect cultures, eras and design inspirations. It is a blend of Indian craftsmanship, American influences and historical jewelry references and yet it has a modern direction.
