As a fashion content writer, I’m constantly fascinated by how designers take familiar pieces and give them a completely different meaning. One accessory that has struck my eye for the 2026 fashion season is the cummerbund, a piece which is generally linked with tuxedos and formalwear, but which is now being worn as a striking everyday fashion statement.

What I find particularly interesting is that the cummerbund is now being worn as a fashion piece in plain sight rather than concealed away under a jacket. Instead of simply finishing a formal dress, it may become the star of the ensemble.

Valentino also delved on the accessory in their Fall/Winter 2026 collection. The cummerbund was teamed with embroidered tops, short dresses and even jeans. I think that’s where the trend really becomes intriguing because it shows the accessory doesn’t have to be stuck in eveningwear.
Rather, it can be utilised to define the waist, give structure and create an entirely other proportion to an ensemble.
Why This Trend Works for Me
I think that part of the reason the cummerbund is getting attention is that fashion is growing more comfortable with surprising pairings. Things don’t have to be worn for their intended function anymore.
A dressy accessory can be worn with casual trousers. It’s a traditionally male item, yet it can be assimilated into a feminine shape. With the appropriate styling, even a piece resting in an old wardrobe can suddenly become current.

That’s what I think is interesting about this pattern. It’s not necessarily about buying anything new. It can be about perceiving something familiar in a different way.
How I’d Style It
If I was building an ensemble around a cummerbund, I would be careful not to become too formal. Coupled with fitted trousers, wide-leg trousers, denim or even a basic dress, it might give a more modern impression.
A satin or bright one might be the statement piece or a black or neutral cummerbund could be for someone who wants a more subdued look.
I think the trick is to make the cummerbund shine out, rather than seeing it as a hidden aspect of formalwear.
The Accessory You Never Expected
The cummerbund is part of a wider trend in fashion to mess with nontraditional waist style. Scarves, enormous belts, wrapped materials and other unexpected accessories have demonstrated the great attention that designers are already paying to the waist.
As a fashion content writer, I see these trends unfold and the cummerbund is another example of how the industry continues to defy established styling standards.
What was once a tuxedo staple may now be a statement piece with jeans, dresses or everyday suiting. The cummerbund may have debuted in formalwear, but its recent runway appearances promise a far more contemporary life for the accessory.
