Armedangels’ Sustainable Windbreaker Named One of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2026

As a writer of fashion content, I see the growing link-up of inventive design and eco-friendly materials as a major trend in the fashion industry. The German fashion brand Armedangels has been internationally recognized after its windbreaker made entirely from Tencel Lyocell outer fabric was listed among TIME magazine’s Best Inventions of 2026. The recognition showcases how fashion brands are looking for alternatives to traditional synthetic materials all the while achieving the functionality that is expected from everyday outerwear.

The windbreaker’s outer fabric is a ripstop made entirely of wood-based Lyocell fibers, and is free of a membrane, synthetic fibers or PFAS, according to FashionUnited. The jacket, which launched in March as part of Armedangels’ Spring/Summer 2026 collection, is a new avenue for developing functional apparel with lower reliance on petroleum-based materials.

A Fresh Approach to Sustainable Outerwear

Founded in Cologne in 2007, Armedangels created the pioneering jacket together with the Lenzing Group, textile consultancy Montebelo and weaving mill Hermin Textile. The project is about making functional outerwear without the synthetic materials that are common in windbreakers. TIME selects 300 inventions annually, judged for originality, effectiveness, ambition and potential impact.

The material is made from Tencel Lyocell fibers by Lenzing which are made from certified or controlled wood. The fibers are produced in a closed-loop process, with the solvent being recycled and reused. The process uses at least 50 percent less water and emits at least 50 percent less carbon dioxide equivalent emissions compared with conventional unbranded Lyocell, Lenzing said, based on the assessment method cited.

Also the production process is important for the performance of the jacket. Hermin Textile produces fine yarns in Taiwan and weaves them into a dense ripstop fabric. The material is then treated with heat and pressure to increase the density. Armedangels says this construction offers up to 97 percent wind resistance.

The jacket also has a PFC-free finish for a measure of water resistance against light rain. The Lyocell fibers expand slightly when they touch moisture and this enables the fabric to close. The brand, however, points out that the windbreaker is water-repellent and not completely waterproof.

Less Synthetic Materials in Clothing

Another interesting aspect is the effort to decrease petroleum-based components throughout the entire garment. Armedangels says 99.9 percent of its trimmings contain no synthetics or petroleum-based materials. These are metal teeth zipper tape, metal cord stoppers, cotton and natural rubber cuffs and a water based reflective print. There is not a good alternative so a little plastic part stays at the end of the zipper .

The windbreaker is digitally designed in CLO3D and is gender neutral in fit. Available in three colorways with a functional approach that gives greater importance to alternative textile materials.

What This Means For Fashion Industry

As a fashion content writer the recognition of Armedangels is an important direction for future clothing design. Fashion innovation is no longer about the look, the silhouette and the seasonal trends. The development of materials is also becoming a key part of how brands create functional and more environmentally conscious products.

The windbreaker is an example of how natural, wood-based fibers are being explored for clothing that has traditionally used synthetic fabrics. The jacket is not 100% free of plastic parts, and can’t replace fully waterproof outerwear in all circumstances, but its construction points to an alternative to watch.

Armedangels see the project as a first step to produce more outerwear without synthetic fibers. As the fashion industry continues to look for new materials, innovations like this could encourage other brands to rethink the design and manufacture of everyday garments.
