For the look, Vogue reports, London Balloon Company’s Leila Holmes and The Balloon Stylist London’s Fiona Eagle traveled to Reykjavík to build it. The final design was made with almost 700 white balloons of various sizes.
The balloons were manufactured to be nearly see-through, so the ensemble has a gentle, surreal quality to it. This helped make Björk’s silhouette less like clothing and more like a moving sculpture.
I think this is a fantastic example of how creativity doesn’t always have to be about traditional couture techniques, as a fashion writer. Sometimes an unexpected material can have more visual impact than costly fabrics.

One of the more interesting things about the look is that it was never intended to be perfect.
Balloons can burst – especially in adverse weather conditions. Wind and rain in Iceland compounded the problem. In fact, one balloon is said to have burst just before Björk took to the stage. The team replaced it quickly and the show went on.”
